   Most people, if they thoroughly search their bureau and desk drawers, will   
   find old stuff--coins, maybe even currency, and fare instruments.  People who   
   aren't regular visitors to NYC are more likely to have leftover cards.   
      
   I fail to see why a five year old Metrocard is worthless.  If you find old   
   cash, it's still good (less the effect of inflation, but then Metrocards   
   aren't in rides, but cash value.)
