The signal line - a rope that went the length of the car with a       single-stroke mechanical bell on each end - worked by the rear-most       conductor pulling "two bells" in the penultimate car. The next       conductor "up the line" would hear that in his tail-most car, and       repeat the signal with the rope in his next-forward car. Eventually       the motorman would get "two bells" from the bell in the head car, and       relying on that would take off.              Ah, the memories!              "Stand Clear of the Closing Doors, Please"              Phil Kane - Beaverton, OR       PNWR CP HALL MP 29.9 - OE District              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
