And blocking traffic on the bridge, a vital link in the commute
pattern. Yesterday (Thursday) the US Coast Guard (who has
jurisdiction) and the numerous law enforcement agencies who responded
decided that "enough of protest theater" and gave the ship the "full
steam ahead" signal narrowly missing the self-styled acrobats.

Reminiscent of the anti-war protestors who tried to block the tracks
leading into the Port Chicago - Concord Naval Weapons Station in the
San Francisco Bay area several decades ago and the one guy who
insisted on sitting on the tracks after several warnings. The
engineer got the "high-ball" and the guy lost both legs.

Many of us were of the opinion that the cops should have cut the ropes
at the very beginning after the order to disperse was given, and see
how well they could swim. The cops played "Mister Nice Guy - Catch
and Release" but they should have been all rounded up and take to the
otherwise-unused Wapato jail in Portland to enjoy the County's
hospitality for a few days - intentionally blocking a navigable water
way is a crime - but that would make bad press.

One idiot used a bicycle U-lock to fasten himself to the BNSF lift
bridge downstream from the St Johns Bridge in an attempt to keep it
from being raised, but the cops cut the lock off and he resides in the
pokey now on criminal trespassing charges - BNSF wanted the book
thrown at him for that stunt.
