Many transit companies had record ridership in 1946. The reason was
that some servicemen were home and running around, the economy was
very strong, automobiles weren't out yet, gasoline was still tight,
and transport was tied up bringing servicemen home from the coasts.

Indeed, many US citizens expected rationing and shortages to end on
VJ day. With many millions of servicemen still overseas, this wasn't
possible. Those soldiers still had to be fed and transported back
to the U.S. Also, the people expected the soldiers to be returned
home very quickly, and it simply wasn't physically possible. Even
if shipping could be found, there had to be a way to get men
home to the inland from the coasts.
