   Even then there were free transfers between systems of subway lines at   
   many points.  We used them quite often.  The one that we really   
   wanted, though - IRT Junius Street to BMT Livonia Avenue - didn't   
   exist and AFAIK never existed until the advent of the MetroCard --   
   assuming that the pedestrian bridge over the LIRR Bay Ridge Branch   
   tracks - colloquially called "rape alley" - was still available.  I've   
   heard that it was either closed or torn down.  All of us east of the   
   tracks used it to get to Straus  JHS on the west side, and vice versa   
   for HS students on the west side getting to Thomas Jefferson HS on the   
   east side.  All gone now.
