I remember transferring from the IND subway to the BMT elevated in
Brooklyn and there was a 'TA man on the staircase handing out
little tickets to be used as a transfer. It's now built in.
BTW, the little tickets were printed as "BMT", nothing about
   the NYCTA.

Presumably that job was bid out like other jobs. I wonder if such
an assignment was popular or undesirable.

Does the MTA still employ elevator operators, or have all them
been automated? I remember an old elevator at an IND station uptown
(maybe near the Cloisters) with a man operating it. Didn't seem
like a great job, merely going up and down between the entrance and
   the station.

Ironically, with handicapped access, there are more elevators,
but AFAIK they're all automated. Unfortunately, the NYT says
   they frequently break down.
