IIRC the FL-9 was designed to switch at the boundary of electric
territory "out in the open", far from GCT. The "switch on the fly"
never worked well, and eventually all change-overs were done manually
when the train made a station stop. I don't know whether the
auto-switch was rebuilt when the FL-9s were rebuilt.
