   Many decades ago I was intrigues by the Paris subway system barriers   
   (like RR X-ing gates) at the foot of stairways that prevented more   
   passengers from accessing the platform when a train was about to enter   
   the station.  I haven't been back since so I don't know if they still   
   do that.
