After the MTA took over control of SIRT, the 1920s rolling stock
was in bad shape. As a temporary fix, the MTA borrowed a few
old LIRR MU cars. But the real solution was the acquisition of the
   special R-44 fleet.

Years ago, SIRT had conductors collecting tickets just like any
railroad. Then the MTA converted it to MetroCard, but only at the
two inner stations. Riders between other stations can now ride
   free.

SIRT remains a very costly operation, the farebox recovery ratio
   is very poor.
