1958--a year of change at Grand Central
   26 Jan 18 13:31:09

The year 1958 was one of change for Grand Central Terminal.

New York Central management, after the death of Robert Young,
concluded that passenger service was losing serious money
and ordered a number of cutbacks.

. The premier train, the 20th Century Limited, was now losing
money, gained coaches, added six stops to its run, and lost
   its elite extra-fare status.

. The Putnam branch was abandoned

. The New York Central aggressively sought to rent any idle space
   in the terminal.

. The ticket office was getting used to the new Burroughs Ticketeer
machines, which printed tickets automatically from a matrix strip.
(That system would continue into the Penn Central and even
   Conrail.)

. Planning began to build what would become the Pan Am building
   atop the terminal.

. The Western Union Telegraph office still was busy enough to
require 30 employees in 1958. Overnight alone 2,000 messages
arrived to be delivered by 9 a.m.)

. In January 1958, NYC CEO Robert Young died and Alfred Perlman
   took over.

. In February 1958, transcontinental service was terminated. It had
been championed by Robert Young, but was expensive and not
   successful.

. In July 1958 the NYC terminated its contract with the Pullman
Company and operated sleeping cars themselves.

. NYC continued to sell off passenger station buildings.

. They still had the trains to overnight camps, carrying 5,000 passengers.
