   In that scene, the ticket agent didn't actually produce a ticket.   
   He was suspicious and phoned in a report.  Grant realized this and   
   ran off.  He snuck aboard the train and hid in the bathroom from   
   conductors.  (FWIW, whenever I ridden trains, conductors check   
   the bathrooms.)
