   Deregulation of the telephone system cost customers far more   
   than the alleged savings.  What advocates fail to understand is   
   that technological advances--happening through Bell Labs research--   
   was responsible for many of the rate decreases, such as cheap   
   long distance or customers owning their own telephone sets.
