Many years ago certain lines were joint service between the
BMT and IRT. After a big reorg, that was eliminated.

BMT had narrow trains from its elevated division and thus
could share track with the IRT Flushing Line.

Somewhere there is a history of Queensboro Plaza station and
how it worked in the past before the big reorg.
