I knew people who did that from NYC to DC. It wasn't a fun--a
long day--but doable. Likewise, people from DC travelled to NYC
   for one day.

As an aside, lately employers have been stingy with travel
for their workers. One employer required NJT/SEPTA for
points anywhere between NYC and Philadephia. But then that
employer expected people to stay with SEPTA all the way
to Wilmington and get Amtrak from there to Washington.
That would require another change of train and add to
the trip time. Too much and the people refused and
the bureaucrat who ordered it had to back down. But
I am hearing more and more stories like this.

Even national travel--a person is expected to work a full
day, fly out overnight, work the next day, fly back
overnight, and return to work the next day. No motel
stay, no rest for a three hour flight (plus several
hours to the airport each way).

Other employers just don't reimburse at all, especially
for training, even when it's mandatory and part of the job.

By the way, the above applies to the rank 'n file. I know a
few executives, and they continue to travel first class all
the way. They ride Acela, not a SEPTA local. They can stay
in a motel, not catch a little sleep on the plane and drive
   home at 3 a.m.
