The economics are not there, manufacturers simply haven't been able to
produce an all-electric car that will perform as well as one driven by a
   combustion engine.

That is a total myth unless all electricity comes from clean renewable
sources like solar, wind, hydro, which it does not. Most electricity comes
from dirty old coal and nuclear sources, so all you're doing is changing the
source of pollution from the tailpipe to the generating plant.

An electric motor has moving parts and is subject to mechanical wear and
tear just like any other machine. Also, the storage devices are complex
electro-chemical devices that are expensive to maintain and replace.

The answer is economic unviability has killed the electric car. Until some
new technology for batteries comes along they will be more or less
   "semi-green toys."
