   I don't doubt the EV1 was a good car with the right application.  They had a   
   range of 90 - 160 km (depending on model) and would have been useful for   
   short commutes or city living, but that eight-hour recharge cycle would have   
   been very restricting otherwise.  You wouldn't buy one to drive across   
   Canada or even the next city.  The problem is no company is going to spend   
   $80,000 to produce an all-electric car that sells for $40,000 which can't   
   compete with the performance of a $20,000 conventional auto.  You'd go broke   
   very quick.  GM probably could have done a better job marketing the car, but   
   considering auto manufacturing is a highly-competitive industry, you don't   
   want to tie up a lot of resources on things that don't make money. The   
   shareholders really don't like that. ;)
