   We (Canada) sent troops to Afghanistan because technically the US (a   
   NATO country) was "attacked" on 9-11 by AlKayda  (which was based in   
   Afghanistan at the time and which had the backing of the Taliban gov't   
   of Afghanistan).   
      
   When a NATO country is attacked, there is an obligation on the part of   
   other NATO countries to mount a defense or to counter-attack.   
      
   Had Canada not sent troops to Afghanistan (to appease the US more than   
   anything) it's highly likely that the US would have mounted more than   
   just a softwood and beef blockade.  They could have suspended NAFTA   
   and really put the Canadian economy into turmoil.
