I bet most people       are still putting them at the curb for recycling.              There's another angle to this, and it pertains to recycling. There       are some municipalities that don't pick up recycling from commercial       addresses. Which means it's a hassle for bars and restaurants to       participate in a recycling program, which could be why we now have       this stupid province-wide deposit on wine and liquor bottles.              I've never heard about any studies done by the province to show that       enough wine and liquor bottles were showing up at the landfill to       justify a deposit and collection program.              An alternative explanation is that recyclers don't want to collect       glass (not much comes in glass any more).              The really crazy thing about this is that at least with beer bottles,       the bottles get recycled (re-used) but the wine and liquor bottles       don't - so it makes no sense to have a deposit and collection progrm       for them.              > So does that mean the LCBO gets to keep the rest       > or do they pay up to the cities?              Keep the rest of what? If 58% of the bottles are being returned to       the beer stores (which is where you're supposed to bring them - not       the LCBO) then what is the "rest" that you're talking about? The       other 48% are being put out at the curb for recycling or trash.              > The cities are screwed again -they used to get the recycling$       > on the bottles and now lose 58% of that to the LCBO!!!!!              What do you think the BEER STORE (not the LCBO) does with those       bottles? THEY SEND IT TO THE RECYCLERS. What else are they gonna do       with them?              The cities are losing money on recycling. Recycling does not pay for       itself. The cities have contracts with the recyclers to drive around       an pick up the shit and pay them money. The recyclers take the money       from the cities, plus what-ever they can sell the shit for once they       process it.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
