   Guns kill at a distance.  Guns can kill or injure children or kids who   
   happen to find and pick them up.  If I were confronted with someone   
   who was mentally unstable, or on drugs, or distraught, depressed,   
   angry, drunk, or any number of other conditions - if I were confronted   
   with someone in that state and could choose if they had a gun or a   
   knife, I'll take the knife any day.   
      
   In the current landscape of consumer product, firearms stand   
   relatively alone as being inherently dangerous by design.  If guns   
   were invented tommorrow as a consumer product, they would not pass   
   product safety standards and would not be allowed for sale.   
      
   Lawn darts are no longer sold for that reason.   
      
   But firearms, like cigarrettes, are legacy products that have been   
   available in our society for hundreds of years.  If they didn't have   
   that history, if they were invented tommorrow, they wouldn't be   
   allowed to be sold as consumer products for obvious reasons.

   By the sounds of his condition and situation, he might very well be in   
   violation of some current firearms laws if he does own a gun, and may   
   already legally not qualify to obtain, own or use one.
