In Calgary I've never seen anywhere with underground wiring that places
the meters inside, although some older places with lines running
directly into the house well above ground had their meters indoors.

I lived in one place that had an indoor meter, although it was moved
outside a few months after I moved. Although I was generally home I
rarely let the meter readers in simply because there was little
incentive, the estimates were good enough and I didn't like letting
strangers in my house more than necessary.

I have to think that sending meter readers out during daylight hours has
got to be one of the biggest wastes of manpower possible in areas with
indoor meters, between people that simply aren't home and people like
me, I doubt they got enough readings to make it worthwhile.

I'm a little curious how well the wireless ones will work from inside
houses, at least if they are exclusively RF based. That being said, I
wouldn't be surprised if they use powerline networking to avoid the
   whole issue.
