|    Montreal to lead the way on electric car    |

XPost: can.politics, bc.politics              Montreal Gazette - April 14, 2015                     Montreal looking into setting up an electric-car sharing service                     The city will have its own Montreal-specific electric car-sharing service       starting next year, Mayor Denis Coderre said Monday.              Coderre said the city intends to be a North American leader in electric       transportation, and is looking at car sharing as a way to help further the       trend.              The city will issue a call for interested parties to discuss the idea in June.        A call for proposals will be issued this fall to invite companies to come up       with a solution for a fully electric car-sharing service in the city, complete       with charging stations. The city expects the new service to be rolled out       starting next spring.              By 2020, the city expects to have a fleet of 1,000 electric cars, plus enough       charging stations spread throughout the city. The charging stations would also       be publicly available to anyone with an electric car.              Catherine Maurice, a spokesperson for the mayor, said the city would centralize       the issuing of universal permits from the boroughs and by 2020 it would no       longer allow non-electric cars to have the permits.              The city will have its own Montreal-specific electric car-sharing service       starting next year, Mayor Denis Coderre said Monday.              Coderre said the city intends to be a North American leader in electric       transportation, and is looking at car sharing as a way to help further the       trend.              The existing cars-sharing services, Car2Go and Communauto, welcomed the       announcement on Monday.              Jeremi Lavoie, location manager for Car2Go in Montreal, said he’s not       deterred       by the fact that universal parking permits will be reserved exclusively for       electric cars. Currently Car2Go and Communauto’s Auto-mobile service       operate       with universal parking permits in five of the city’s 19 boroughs       (CĂ´te-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Mercier—Hochelaga-Maisonneuve,       Sud-Ouest,       and Plateau-Mont-Royal). They allow users to conveniently park in spaces       reserved for residents.              Out of the 29 cities where Car2Go is available, three have fully electric       fleets: Amsterdam, San Diego and Stuttgart, Germany.              â€śIn Amsterdam, for example, we have the same number of cars as in Montreal       (340), but they are fully electric,” Lavoie said. “The difference is that       in       Amsterdam, there are 1,600 charging stations that are public and available to       everyone. In Montreal, I think there are only four, and they are all       downtown.”              Lavoie said Car2Go, which is owned by automaker Daimler AG, has much expertise       that it can share with the city when it comes to building an electric       car-sharing service.              If the company isn’t selected to provide the service, he said it will still       be       able to operate, and it will benefit from the city’s new-found openness       toward       car sharing services.              Coderre said the city’s boroughs should all feel free to issue universal       permits to the existing car-sharing services as a transitory measure, even       though they are not fully electric.              â€śThis means that we can keep on growing,” Lavoie said. “So it is good       news.”              As for the existing cars, Maurice said the car-sharing services need not scrap       them. They would continue to be used by members, and would be able to be parked       in private lots or in non-reserved zones.       ___________              Car2go electric vehicles on display in Washington, D.C. Car2Go operates a       car-sharing service in Montreal, which hopes to set up its own electric       car-sharing service starting next year.              http://wpmedia.montrealgazette.com/2015/04/car2go-launches-first       electric-carsharing-program-in-washing.jpg?quality=55&strip=all&       =660&h=495&crop=1              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
