   Anti - Catholicism in Canada
   21 Jun 15 17:57:00

Canada is founded on a very deep seated animosity between Catholics and
Protestants. This was recognized in Section 93 of the BNA Act which gives
Catholics a right of appeal to the Governor-General in Council (Parliament)
from any act or decision of a
provincial authority affecting its rights in relation to education. The BNA
Act became the Constitution of Canada in 1982. This animosity has boiled over
many times. The following are a few examples.

Prior to 1949 the Supreme Court of Canada was an intermediate appeal Court
with the final appeal being made to the Judicial Committee of the Privy
Council in England. During this period, the Ontario Legislature passed a law
   that removed Catholics right
to hold public office. Ontario Catholics had to take their appeal to England
   to have this law annulled.

In spite of Section 93 of the BNA Act, Catholics were prevented from setting
up a school in London Ontario. City Catholics appealed to both the Ontario
Legislature and the House of Commons to have their rights recognized, but to
   no avail. A work around
solution was devised by the Bishop of Detroit in Michigan who opened a
Catholic mission in London Ontario and allowed local Catholics to attend the
   mission school.

In August 1980 Robert Campeau who owned 5.4% of a Toronto Stock Exchange
company called Royal Trustco Ltd. tried to increase his interest because he
believed that would give his construction company easier access to mortgages.
A battle broke out on the
TSX and the Exchange cease traded the shares of Royal Trustco. During an
investigation and subsequent hearing by the Ontario Securities Commission a
retired Canadian Army General was asked why he had manipulated the price of
   Royal Trustco shares on the
TSX. The man replied, "I wasn't going to let any upstart Catholic from Sudbury
increase his holdings in the company so he'd have easier access to mortgages."
This reply has been reproduced in books on finance and banking in Canada.
