A long time ago Time Magazine ran a now famous story titled, "There Is No       Canada". Time declared what Americans called Canada was in fact 10 little       kingdoms spread out along the northern border of the United States that were       more hostile towards each        other than they were towards Americans. Being naïve, I found this humorous;       however, now I'm not so sure.               Once I took my girlfriend MP to visit Cape Cod. There was a Tourist       Information just before the bridge going over to the Cape there is a map of       Cape Cod, the size of a billboard. While I was looking at the map a young       American said, "Americans are sick        and tired of the war between Ontario and Quebec. The people of Massachusetts       are going to let you and your girlfriend have a good vacation.              As a student in Quebec City people would say to me openly in the streets,       "You're a spy from Ontario. We're going to make you pay for the sins of       Ontario."              When Brian Mulroney was leader of the Progressive Conservatives people in       Quebec City openly declared, "Brian Mulroney is a true son of the soil of       Quebec. He's going to take us to Ottawa and help us beat Ontario from there."              When I first came to study in Vancouver I rented in an upper income area. One       day at the local super market a woman reminded me, "You don't have any rights       in Vancouver or BC because you come from an other part of Canada. The only       rights you have here        are those you fight for."              Several years later the buzz topic of conversation in Vancouver was building       iron gates on the Rogers Pass in the Rocky Mountains to keep Canadians coming       into BC from Alberta.               JL - 09-24-16              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
