   It was on April 17, 1982, that Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Pierre   
   Trudeau signed the Charter, thereby guaranteeing fundamental rights and   
   freedoms for all Canadians. In honour of this milestone, the Canadian Bar   
   Association introduced Law Day in 1983 as a means to commemorate the event   
   and educate the public about the legal system.

   "Every individual is equal before and under the law and has the right to the   
   equal protection and equal benefit of the law without discrimination and, in   
   particular, without discrimination based on race, national or ethnic origin,   
   colour, religion, sex, age or mental or physical disability."
