    Toronto Sun - March 30, 2020

75% of returning travellers bypassing mandatory quarantine: Study

In households where someone has recently travelled abroad, 75% of them have
visited a grocery store and 41% have hosted guests, despite a mandatory
quarantine imposed by the Canadian government, according to a new study.

According to Innovative Research Group, of the 2,000 people surveyed, 7% —
140 people — said they had been out of the country.

Among them, 60% said they had been to a retail shop other than a grocery or
drug store, 52% said they’ve met up with a friend or relative outdoors and
36% said they had gathered in a small group inside a home.

“This is scary. Canadians returning from outside Canada in the past 14 days
don’t appear to be following medical guidelines,” said Innovative Research
Group president Greg Lyle in a tweet.

“Some of this activity may be from before their return, but much of it is
   likely here in Canada.”

However, a majority — or 56% — of Canadians report changing their
behaviour a great deal in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

This is a 24 percentage point increase from last week. However, many
Canadians say they are still getting together with friends and family despite
   advice not to.

“Young Canadians are still being the most social – in the past week over
half have (56%) met up with a group of friends or hosted/visited with someone
inside a home, according to the data,” said the company in a statement.

Nearly half of Canadians – 47% – have experienced a direct economic loss
in their household as a result of COVID-19 including layoffs, reduced hours,
losing contract work and owning businesses that have lost sales or closed.
   The same number – 47%
now expect that Canada is headed into a severe recession.

The research group said this is highest ever in its tracking history, at
nearly double the previous high of 26% in April 2009 and a 37-point jump from
11% just one month ago. About 57% feel confident about their household’s
   financial situation, down
   only 4-points from 61% a month ago.

Despite ongoing confidence in their household’s financial situation,
four-in-10 Canadians are feeling a significant negative impact due to COVID-19
on their quality of life. And 50% expect they will feel those impacts if the
   situation continues for at
least two months. Health-care workers expect a larger negative impact on their
physical health than other Canadians—now and in the near future.

Finally, Canadians appear to approve of response from provincial and federal
governments. The survey found the approval rating this week was at 69%, up from
   ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
63% the previous week for their provincial government’s response and 59% (up
   ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
from 50%) of the federal government’s response.
   ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Just 10% think that governments have gone too far, compared to 38% who would
like to see more, while 47% think the response has been “the right amount.”

The poll was conducted on March 23 to 26. However, since the online survey was
not a random probability-based sample, a margin of error cannot be calculated.
