|    Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE2)    |

From: nobody@microsoft.com              Angiotensin is a peptide hormone involved in control of blood pressure.       Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE2) is a cell membrane bound protein that       converts a prohormone into active angiotensin hormone.              ACE2 is newsworthy because it is the binding site for SARS-CoV-2 virus, the       cause of Covid-19 disease and sky rocketing global pandemic. As many as half       a billion lives may be lost; much worse than the Spanish Flu 1918-1919.              SARS-CoV-2 virus is mutating and evolving quickly. Human evolution unfolds       at a much slower rate. Human evolution involves population changes in allele       frequencies. Alleles are different versions of genes.. Some people have       brown hair, some red, blond or whatever. There are 32 known alleles of the       ACE2 gene located on the X-chromosome. Women have two X, men one X. This has       significance to the differing susceptibility to Covid-19 disease by men or       women and between ethnic/racial groups. Epidemiology is interested in such       questions.              Men have 32 possible alleles of the ACE2 gene. Some are at more at risk of       death from Covid-19 disease, some less. Mathematically, within the human       gene pool women may have 32 x 32 = 1024 combinations of ACE2 alleles.       Virus - cell interactions have been ongoing for 4 billion years, one of the       driving forces of natural selection.              X-chromosome is also the repository for brain related genes. The       X-chromosome has been under selective pressure during the evolution of       increased intelligence in humans and our ancestors.              One might speculate, "Do pandemics like Covid-19 disease increase       intelligence in the human gene pool over time?"              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
