|    Are we about to own an airline again?    |

Trans Canada Airlines to Air Canada to Our Canada Air?              At least areas of Canada that aren't 'profitable' would be protected for       having air services. We already own an inter-provincial oil pipeline. We       know that's a white elephant even before it's completed.               But what about having ownership in airlines that service not only Canadian       routes, but intercontinental routes? In times of war or insurgencies that       cause mass migrations of people, it would be handy to have govt-owned aircraft       ready. But what happens        during times of crises - like the current pandemic - do they keep flying or       will 'profits' not be the driving force that continues to carry people between       infected and not-so-infected countries?              I personally feel that ANY industry that gets government (our tax dollars)       financial help or bailouts should have government people sitting in their       managements. Every move, every expenditure, every salary increase to be open       and visible to the        government/tax payers through every directors' meeting or vote.              I'm tired of having my money, as a tax payer, being used and abused by 'for       profit' private enterprises. They make it on their own - or they fold.        That's what private ownership is all about. This 'we're a private company,       but we need government money        to help us through rough times' bullshit has got to stop.       _____________________________________       CTVNews.ca - Sunday, October 18, 2020               Canada isn't ruling out taking a stake in Canadian airlines: Leblanc              OTTAWA -- The Canadian government isn't ruling out the possibility of taking a       stake in Canadian airlines, like WestJet and Air Canada, as ministers consider       how to help the sector in its struggles amid the COVID-19 pandemic.              Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic Leblanc confirmed the possibility       during an interview with CTV Question Period Host Evan Solomon, airing Sunday.              During the interview, Solomon pointed out that in a bid to save their own       airlines, Germany took at 20-per-cent stake in Lufthansa. When he asked       Leblanc if Canada is considering taking such a step here, Leblanc said the       government "is very much        discussing that."              https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/canada-isn-t-ruling-out-taking-a       stake-in-canadian-airlines-leblanc-1.5148841              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
