Once upon a time, before IBM abandoned it, I used OS/2. Seems like
you would need some old hardware to have Warp 4 compatible devices
though.

I did some testing with the DOS version on WFWG 3.11, using the updated
WFWG serial driver and a cheapo 2-port multiport serial card. I got 2
nodes running, an upload on one, a download on the other, and copying a
file across the network at 100mbs, all at the same time, without
dropping any characters on the serial ports. The file copy throughput
was about 80mbs, or 80% of wire capacity. Pretty good for Windows 3.1.

It looked so good, I planned to use it. But later I discovered that
running a big compile job and opening DOS windows at the same time would
crash the machine. Seems my CPU is too fast for Windows 3.1. Windows 95,
unpatched, is known to have problems with CPUs faster than 350mhz. And
I'm guessing similar problems lurk in Windows 3.1. Too bad there are no
patches for it. I tested Windows 95 too, but its network thoughput is
pretty bad, only about 30mbs. I also tested Windows 98. They fixed the
network problem, but messed up the serial driver.

The only solution would be to run old hardware, CPU <= 350mhz.  But
that's hard to find nowdays, even on Ebay.
