-> TM> I hear someone got the CDC source code compiled and running. -> I don't know if You mean the same thing, but I had heard somewhere or -> read somewhere that that somebody had gotten the source code and was -> working on it and upgrading it, but was worried what to name it after -> it was a finished product so as not to get into trouble. that had to -> be at least 2 years ago, and I believe he was bluffing No, that's not me, and I have no idea who that was. But I am the one who recently got the PCBoard 15.3 source code compiled and running. It's been floating around the net for a while, and one day I just wanted to see if it could be done. It was a chore, but doable. I compiled the library and main executable, but none of the utilities. No reason to, yet. With a base install of 15.3, the source code, plus my hacks to it, well there you go. Bugs can be fixed and you can make whatever enhancements you desire. I'm just wondering if anybody still cares. Corey Blake was glad to hear it, but are there others? For me, it's a labor of love, so if anyone wants it, just say so. BTW, I spoke to David Terry recently. He said he's tried to contact Fred Clark over the years but could never locate him. I searched the copyright office records and found the original registration where David and Fred assigned their rights to CDC as a work for hire. But I could not find any subsequent registration of assignment to any other party, such as a creditor in bankruptcy. That would mean the copyrights still belong to CDC, not the bank. I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not offering legal advice. But to the best of my knowledge, the PCBoard copyrights are abandoned property that no one else can now acquire. CDC no longer exists, and thus cannot transact any business required for assigning them to any other entity. And there is no indication that either Fred Clark or CDC will ever reappear. Some time ago I bought a used copy of the PCBoard manuals and disks. I've since lost those materials, but I did legally obtain a PCBoard license. Unless I hear otherwise from Fred or CDC, I see no reason why PCBoard users should not become self supporting and use the source code to fix bugs and make derivative works. --- QScan/PCB v1.20a / 01-0462 * Origin: Christian Fellowship | cfbbs.dtdns.net 856-933-7096 (1:266/512) |
