   An ad hoc group of preservationists and concerned Philadelphians will be   
   holding a noon rally this Saturday, November 20th in front of the   
   Convention Hall at 3400 Civic Center Blvd. We were horrified to learn   
   belatedly of the ongoing dismantlement of the interior of historic   
   Convention Hall and the University of Pennsylvania's plans to demolish   
   it and the adjacent Civic Center Museum building.   
      
   The Art Deco-style Convention Hall was the centerpiece of Philly's   
   original convention center and a primary civic venue for decades. Since   
   its opening in 1930, Convention Hall has hosted national political   
   conventions, the Beatles, the Pope, Penn commencements, the Mummers, the   
   Philadelphia Flower Show and countless other events.   
      
   The neo-classical Philadelphia Commercial Museum was one of several   
   large structures built for the 1899 National Export Exposition. The   
   other expo buildings were razed within a few years of the expo.   
      
   We insist that adaptive re-uses of both buildings must be explored   
   further and find it hard to believe that a University which includes one   
   of the finest architecture and design programs in the nation would   
   commit to the destruction of two such great architectural and cultural   
   treasures.
