   Very true. There have been studies, most of them by the Annenberg   
   School of Communications at Penn, that show a definite correlation   
   between watching TV news and the fear of crime in urban areas.

   Crime was much worse in the early '90s than it is now. I was the   
   victim of a string of crimes (against my person and against my   
   property) back then, but since '95 or so, nothing. And I live in a   
   more dangerous neighborhood now.
