   Most of those bad raps are based upon supposition and not fact. For   
   instance, nay-sayers claim that the batteries will last only 100,000   
   miles because that's what the warranty is, or that they will last 8 to   
   10 years because that's what the warranty is. That's like saying that   
   the engine and drive train will last only 50,000 miles because that's   
   what the warranty is.   
      
   They also cite outrageous replacement costs for the batteries. Fact is   
   there are used battery packs available from front-end wrecks that left   
   the batteries intact. Also if a battery pack goes bad, it's probably   
   only a few cells which can be replaced without replacing the entire   
   battery pack. Of course, during the warranty period, the dealership   
   will probably opt to replace the entire pack because he'll get paid more   
   from Toyota for that.   
      
   And for those who are really concerned about repair costs, there are   
   extended warranties, the longest of which is 100,000 miles or 7 years.   
   (There's also a 100K/6 year policy for those who drive more per year.)   
   The 100K/7 year policy can be had for $995, even though the MSRP is much   
   higher than that.   
      
   I chose not to get the extended warranty, though.
