XPost: ba.politics, dc.media, soc.penpals       XPost: alt.burningman       From: hpark@utep.edu              Three years after the gang rape of an 11-year-old Cleveland girl       by two dozen young men made national headlines, the same city 46       miles north of Houston is grappling with the possibility of yet       another similar attack.              Both cases involved underaged girls, multiple young men and two       dilapidated, vacant homes in the poorer area of Cleveland known       as "the Quarters."              But Cleveland Police Chief Darrel Broussard stressed the newest       case "does not reach the same magnitude" of the 2010 case.              The young girl making an outcry this time is 15 — four years       older than the one in 2010. The legal age of consent in Texas is       17.              The number of alleged attackers in the latest case is less than       the 21 young men who have been convicted in the earlier gang       rape case. Police said they have four to five suspects in the       newest case.              No video tapes              Also, there are no lurid videotapes of the assaults recorded by       the attackers as occurred in the 2010 case. Those graphic tapes,       which went viral around the Cleveland school district, were       apprehended and triggered the investigation.              In the latest case, the parents of the 15-year-old girl reported       the crime to police on Tuesday.              "Their daughter had not been home over the weekend. They had       reported her as a runaway in the past but not this time," said       Broussard.              When the girl returned home, she told her parents what had       happened to her and they reported it to the police, he said.              The teenage girl was taken to a hospital for examination for       sexual assault and possible drugging. Police are looking into       allegations that she might have been given an unspecified drug       by a 17-year-old girl prior to the alleged assault.              'It's still early'              Broussard said results of the hospital examination are pending.              "It's still early. We are aggressively investigating the case       and have a number of people to interview," he said.              He said the assault was alleged to have occurred on one day and       not multiple instances like the 2010 case.              Since it's an ongoing investigation, Broussard said he was       limited on what he could release.              "I can only say we are working with the victim and her family to       gather all the facts and evidence that we can," he said.              In the 2010 case, seven juveniles accepted plea agreements for       seven-year probated sentences, while 12 adults pleaded guilty in       exchange for 15-year sentences. Two adults took their cases to       court and received life or 99-year sentences.              http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/Another-girl-may-       have-been-gang-raped-in-Cleveland-4864500.php                             --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
