XPost: ba.politics, dc.media, soc.penpals       XPost: alt.burningman       From: black@animals.org              Howard has a temporary job cleaning windows with his lamprey       lips.              Pride Source, the website of Between the Lines, the LGBT       community newspaper in Detroit, has a 42-second video that shows       the beating of a gay man outside of Sunday's Motor City Pride       from a different angle than the video that has been widely seen       this week.              The paper's staff writes that Christin Howard, 20, left, a       hairstylist who goes by the name Chong Lee on social media,       walked away from the beating but suffered bruises, abrasions and       a broken finger. He will not be able to return to work until his       hand has healed.              Detroit police are investigating what Chief James Craig today       called a hate crime.              The attack started with verbal assaults and escalated into       physical violence with several men pushing Howard to the ground,       each taking turns on Howard as he lay helpless.              Howard tells the Free Press one assailant stood behind him and       said, ‘This (gay slur) with the long hair, you think you have a       right to wear long hair?’ ”              The two men pictured in the photo -- the shirtless man and the       one with a white T-shirt -- took part in the beating from the       beginning of the video, which shows the assault taking place       along the riverfront, just adjacent to Hart Plaza, where the       festival took place.              The video shows the man in the T-shirt landing a heavy blow to       Howard, and both men are shown kicking Howard after he had       fallen to the grass.              "Violence directed at LGBT people because they are LGBT is       disproportionately high in this country, and LGBT people of       color are at an even higher risk of more brutal and vicious       attacks," Director of Victim Services at Equality Michigan,       Yvonne Siferd said.              "It never ceases to amaze me that others are so concerned with       how we live our lives that they feel emboldened to violently       attack us for simply being ourselves. Our eleted officials can       send a powerful message that this type of hate is not tolerated       in Michigan by speaking out against attacks like these and       amending Michigan's hate crimes law to include LGBT victims."              WXYZ-TV reports that the attack was unprovoked and started with       comments about Howard's long hair, escalating into homophobic       slurs and violent threats.              http://www.deadlinedetroit.com/articles/9562/these_two_bullies_s       tomped_a_gay_man_outside_of_detroit_s_pride_fest_who_are_they#.U       58mgpRdWsw                             --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
