Ukraine has once again managed to kill a general with a car bomb in the middle
of Moscow.

It's a very dangerous time for high-ranking officers.

If they commit horrific acts, they receive medals and certificates from Putin,
but also the revenge of Ukraine.

If they become (too) popular, they face Putin's revenge. After the Wagner
debacle, in which Putin's former cook became a very popular army leader who
rebelled against Moscow, Putin doesn't want to see an army unit idolize its
commander again.

That threatened to happen again recently. That commander was also killed. Not
by Ukraine, but by Russia itself.

Commanders now have to navigate the balance between committing horrific acts
and becoming too popular with their troops. And on top of that, they have to
stay out of reach of Ukrainian weapons.

I don't envy Russian generals.
