Just to be clear, I'm not arguing in favor of "buy domestic" laws at all. For
the record, I oppose such laws.
I'm pointing out that the design engineering adds significant
value in the manufacturing process. You would seem to agree. I really
liked your argument about the European manufacturers having decades worth
of experience.
Others seem some economic value in having final assembly in the United
States, and one person pointed out, quoted above, that 80% of the content
is manufactured in the United States.
I'm still not getting an answer if the components were designed in the
United States, or to what extent the component's constituent parts are
made in the United States.
If all we're getting is final assembly, even of the components, then
US factories are rather like those Chinese assembly lines putting together
products that were designed elsewhere, in which the final assembly adds
only a small part of the value to the final product.
I know you understand this, but the others don't appreciate it.
