What makes me wonder about it being a push would be whether or not some failure between the cab and the loco might have caused the engineer's instructions not to reach the loco. I am not real knowledgeable on how those operations work, so maybe they are fail-safe. Also, I think having the loco on the back means that there was only the engineer in the cab, while the conductor may have been in the loco. Having the loco on the front would mean two sets of eyes seeing the same things.
