Surprisingly (to me, anyway), the elderly did not have a problem nor
objection when 215 was split to 610 or when 10 digit dialing was
forced upon us.

The objections came from individuals and businesses who had dedicated
equipment (such as burglar alarms) who had to reprogram them.
Apparently there was quite a bit of various specialized equipment that
needed reprogramming during those changes. Individuals had to
reprogram their speed dials.

In contrast, when DDD came out in the 1960s, the elderly and not so
elderly had a tough time with it. For some reason, merely dialing
1+area code+ phone number freaked people out. I guess the 7D plan had
been around for 35 years for a lot of people and old habits die hard
(35 years is a long time). But in the mid 1960s, lots of people
simply refused to directly dial their long distance calls and
continued to place them via the operator. (Later on however, those
very same people adapted easily to 10D per above).

ob transit: Heck, when the transit company went to exchange change
fares it freaked a lot of people out. When NYCTA conveted it was
front page news in the NYT.
