The SMART DMU and so far as I know the GO DMU both are designed for
the 51 inch high platforms, the standard North American single level
car floor height. The standard GO car is designed with steps so that
the standard freight compatible 8 inch high platform can be used and
has an internal 22 or 25 inch high floor on the lower level. The Salt
Lake City variant has no steps and is designed for a 22 inch high
platform which is what the Front Runner uses (actually composed of a 3
car 22 inch high platform plus a 1 car 8 inch high platform so that
trains with 3 GO style cars and 1 ex-NJT Comet car can be used). A
standard GO car can not use the standard high level platform. A 22
inch high platform will clear all but 4 loaded freight cars in the
North American Register according to Hans-Joachim Zierke but not a
person riding on the end step.
