Tx. The station was built in the early '70's by CSS&SB at the very east end of its private right-of-way at Bendix, an industrial park to serve both CSS&SB and passenger trains on the adjacent ex-New York Central. CSS&SB had stopped running on streets into downtown South Bend in the early '70's. Around the same time, Penn Central abandoned the 1928 New York Central station in downtown South Bend, so you have the weird situation that the owner railroad no longer uses it, but the foreign railroad continues to use it. It's just concrete block but functional, with an Amtrak ticket agency, heated and air conditioned and a lot nicer than having no station at all. --- SoupGate/W32 v1.03 * Origin: LiveWire BBS -=*=- UseNet FTN Gateway (1:2320/1) |
