NYT of 3/24/56 says New York Central RR, New Haven RR, and Santa Fe RR will acquire systems for Pullman space reservations. Whether they actually did and how long they used such a system I don't know. The system described above was built by the Teleregister Corp. for American Airlines. AA used it until SABRE, a true computerized system, replaced it in the early 1960s. SABRE was able to store more information for each passenger, plus allow the airline to draw off utilization reports. Teleregister became part of TRW and Bunker Ramo. It's main business was stock quotations. A lot of fancy electronic equipment was developed in the 1950s, but not all of it was practical. Sometimes a highly touted machine was purchased and used for a relatively short time, being retired because it wasn't practical in actual operation. I believe the Pennsylvania Railroad got a fancy system in the late 1950s--complete with moving clerk chairs and TV screens to view records--that didn't work very well. --- SoupGate/W32 v1.03 * Origin: LiveWire BBS -=*=- UseNet FTN Gateway (1:2320/1) |
