   My first thought was cast iron spatula.  Maybe they made something out   
   of damaged cookware.

   Perhaps they were someone's experiment for cooking high volume items too   
   delicate to shove a spatula under in a limited space, like a lunch wagon.   
   Fried eggs 'over easy' aren't pretty after I've tried to flip them.
