   You can't blame them too harshly. Most non-Mercator maps (which means   
   most maps) of the US are slightly rotated counter-clockwise, putting   
   Maine at the same distance from the top of the map as Washington state.   
   This gives people a mistaken notion of the relative northness   
   (northicity?) of places on opposite sides of the country.
