I've played through 95% of GTA:SA's story missions so far and
there was some attempt to give CJ and his home LA gang more depth, but it
really feels like a shallow ripoff of the 90s movies SA is obviously
   influenced by.

I think of GTA3 as more of a deliberately humourous piss take on
gangster cliches, so the similar lack of depth isn't as much of a problem
there. SA has more interesting gameplay with a better on-foot
targetting system, planes, motorcycles, and allies. Plus, even though NYC
is my favourite city in the world, SA's versions of LA, SF, and Vegas are
more compelling than GTA3's version of New York.
