I was wrong about this... Some missions are assigned by the Guilds, but
random forays into the combat areas are also considered 'missions' by the
game interface. The idea is that the first player to go in is called the
mission leader, and it's up to him or her to make decisions (like when to
quit, how to distribute items, and so forth.) So this isn't just a demo
situation. Also, your quarters on the space platform are persistent, and
you can decorate it and have visitors, as well as share items. I found a
model train set it one of the dungeons and it's proudly displayed in the
   middle of the room. :)

Additional impressions: I just tried out the Neudaiz missions, down in the
forested mountains. Seeing this (and having the monsters there hand me my
anatomy) is making me like the game a little bit more. I keep forgetting
that Sega products don't try to win you over right away, but feed you
little morsels of goodness spaced far apart, so as to build passion and
loyalty. I'm hoping the demo opens up at least one more planet so that I
can check out the other environments too.
