It sound like a game from the star control series.
Star Control was released for PC, Amiga and Megadrive.
Star Control II was released for PC and 3DO.
Star Control 3 and 4 had different gameplay.
There is a free game called "The Ur-Quan Masters" which is based on Star
Control II (but has been improved and extended during the last 4 years)
and runs on Linux, Windows and some other OSes. Their homepage is at
   http://sc2.sourceforge.net/
