Sounds familiar?       >              It sound like a game from the star control series.       Star Control was released for PC, Amiga and Megadrive.       Star Control II was released for PC and 3DO.       Star Control 3 and 4 had different gameplay.       There is a free game called "The Ur-Quan Masters" which is based on Star       Control II (but has been improved and extended during the last 4 years)       and runs on Linux, Windows and some other OSes.
