   I understand the sentiment entirely. US and EU players were spoiled by   
   having free Dreamcast PSO servers for at least some of the lifetime of   
   that game. And there are a handful of games with similar online   
   functionality that are free to play online, like Guild Wars and Monster   
   Hunter. At the same time though, Phantasy Star has a history and a depth   
   that isn't available in the other games. I don't think Sega has done   
   enough to sell PSU to the general public as a worthwhile expense.   
      
   It's worth mentioning that a lot of the expense of PSU goes towards   
   fighting hacking. All the saved character data is on the server side, and   
   the client game code does a ridiculous amount of checking to see if the   
   packet data is generated legitimately. Sega may not be any good at   
   marketing, but they want to be better at providing a fair online gaming   
   experience.
