AFAIK the wikipedia numbers are worldwide sales.

Have new Master System variants or Master System games appeared in
Brazil in the last 9 years (that is after Sonic Blast has been ported to
   the SMS)?

I'm a homebrew developer (I have created 4 games for the ColecoVision, a
game console snearly identical to the SG-1000). I intend to write some
games for Sega consoles in the future (far away, I've still 4 game ideas
for the ColecoVision). I want to choose a console with still has some
fans. I'll probably go for the Game Gear (more common than the Master
System according to ebay listings; as popular as the Master System
according to google trends,; similar to the ColecoVision(3.58 Mhz Z80,
similar graphics and sound); not as common as the Master System among
homebrew developers, so I have a chance of doing something new, like
bypassing the BIOS; not as powerful as the Mega Drive and later
consoles, so I have a chance of creating a game that pushes the console
to it's limits without spending the rest of my life on it).

Google trends might be useful as an indicator of popularity, too. It
seems no one searches for the "SG-1000", slightly more people look for
the "Game Gear" than for the "Master System" ("Sega Genesis" and "Mega
Drive" are near the "Game Gear") the "Dreamcast" is what everyone is
looking for. All numbers are declining over the years.
