   Back in the days of wooden ships and iron men the first thing done at   
   the induction of new personal was to line them up and inspect their   
   personal knife. If the blade came to a point the Blacksmith was right   
   there to break the point off. Said to be the original reason for the   
   blunt pointed "mariner's knife" commonly found today in chandleries.
