XPost: in.general, alt.disney, sac.politics       XPost: alt.atheism       From: goobers@abc.com              An 80-year-old Indiana man was arrested for punching a police       officer who stopped him from accosting former kidnapping victim       Elizabeth Smart with a knife.              Claude Hudson was seated in the front row of the Elizabeth Smart       Speaker Series at Indiana State University on Monday. Smart was       speaking about overcoming adversity when he was spotted fiddling       with a 3-inch pocket knife and “just acting peculiar,” ISU       Police Chief Joseph Newport said.              The 80-year-old suspect then concealed the knife and began       making his way past a line of 100 people or so, all waiting to       meet Smart. When an officer stepped in, Hudson hit him twice in       the gut, Newport said.              The Terre Haute native on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to a       battery charge. The judge ordered a mental health evaluation set       his bond at $25,000. He is currently on parole for a burglary       conviction.              Authorities told CBS News he has a history of arrests in       California, Illinois, Missouri, Nevada, and Tennessee. He was       convicted for attempted murder in 1991 for a case in Nevada,       according criminal records cited by the news station.              Investigators have not discovered a connection between Hudson       and Smart, though they did note he is frequently at the       university.              Smart issued a statement through her representative on Thursday       saying she is “grateful for law enforcement and Indiana State       University’s quick response and that the event and her work       continued undeterred.”              Smart made national headlines in 2002 after she was taken from       her bedroom in Salt Lake City and held captive for nine months.       The 29-year-old has since become an American child safety       activist and contributor for ABC News.              http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime/indiana-80-year-old-       arrested-approaching-elizabeth-smart-article-1.2962750              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
